Discovering the you in you

“MAN KNOW THYSELF”

The above statement from Socrates has generated so many interpretations by different renowned scholars that its difficult to arrive at a generally accepted interpretation.

But what exactly was Socrates referring to?  What is this concept of knowledge about? Could it be physical or metaphysical?

It is a known fact that most people spend so much time trying to discover their purpose in life But I am of the opinion that this search becomes an effort in futility if you don’t first discover who you are because discovering who you are is the first step towards discovering your purpose in life.

So many people live and die with inherited opinions about them, in some parts of the country, you hear statements like our grandfather re-incarnated through him as such the family expects him to act and speak like the late grandfather.

At times our environment and circumstances we found and find ourselves tend to mold and shape our behavior and lives.

Life I would say is like a poker game and we are dealt different cards at different times, some are dealt better cards while some, bad ones, those with better cards stand a better chance of winning BUT it doesn’t always work that way.

No matter the kind of cards you are dealt, the outcome is strictly determined by the choices you make, which is why people with bad cards end up wining the game as a result of “CHOICES”

I wouldn’t know who you are today, the inherited opinions you have held on to about yourself, or the experiences that may have shaped who you think you are. Have you ever imagined discovering at the age of 99 or on your dying bed that you have lived someone else’s life all these years?

Unfortunately, parents and society have not helped in this discovery process as you find parents telling their children “I want you to become this or that” (Don’t get me wrong, I am not against parents having good wishes for their children) but we also must work hard to identify what a child’s passion is and encourage them to pursue it (them).

I strongly feel that discovering the you in you is the key to a happy Life. So, pause a little bit and ask yourself “WHO AM I”
